About PONY

PONY (Prostitutes of New York) was formed in 1976 by Jean Powell.

We are a support group for all sex workers, whether current, former or transitioning.  Our members come from every part of the industry.  We have worked in the streets,  clubs, agencies, bordellos, bedrooms, peep shows, BDSM parlors and other sex markets of New York.

Our friends include local attorneys, human rights workers, needle exchange advocates, educators and researchers, health care professionals, drug policy reformers and people who buy sex.

PONY has a lot of dance partners. During the last four decades we have been friendly with numerous organizations and projects, including: Gay Activists Alliance, Judson Memorial Church, Gran Fury, New York Civil Liberties Union,  Gay Men’s Health Crisis, SWANK, FROSTD, Open Society Institute, Come Again Erotic Emporium, New Museum of Contemporary Art, WBAI, The LGBT Community Center, International Committee for Prostitutes’ Rights, COYOTE, SWOP, CORP, Desiree Alliance, $PREAD Magazine, and the Urban Justice Center.*

PONY is a member of the Global Network of Sex Work Projects.  We stand for the repeal of  anti-prostitution laws, an end to raids and arrests based on ethnic profiling, freedom from violence and the right to earn a living from sex work.

*We thank everyone at the UJC Sex Workers Project for their support and legal advice.  PONY’s bio is a work in progress. Watch this space!

I commend your efforts. And indeed will offer my support. My name is Gia, a former high-end booker (i was one of those arrested in the multi-million dollar agency bust in brooklyn) I am not bitter or in denial about any of my choices, but i do take issue with the “laws” They do not seem to apply too all. As far as i know none of the “clients” (although they where the ones whom patronized & spent the millions) are enduring any of the criminal process. Yet I am for talking to them. Where’s the justice in that. If i’m guilty, I shouldn’t be baring that guilt alone, is al i’m saying.
So Yes ! People like me need a voice. Thank You!

I will also be a guest writter on my girlfriends Dinah Blog (another former booker whom retired before all of these high profile bust) Although she left, she never forgot. And began to council. She has been my strength during this ordeal.
